Carbon removal platform Isometric has entered into a new agreement with Anglo American and ZeroEx to issue rigorously verified carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits from an Enhanced Weathering (EW) project in Brazil.

The initiative, Project Earthstone, demonstrates how mining by-products can be repurposed as feedstocks for carbon removal while providing co-benefits for agriculture.

Turning Mine Waste into Climate Solutions

Mining operations generate large volumes of tailings and by-products that, with the right technology, can accelerate carbon sequestration.

By transforming these materials into fast-weathering rock powders, operators can create feedstock for Enhanced Weathering and mineralization projects. This approach leverages existing infrastructure while cutting costs, helping EW scale faster.

Project Earthstone, based near agricultural land in Brazil, is well positioned for rapid deployment. Stockpiles of magnesium-rich material are already available, with the potential to sequester up to 15 million tons of CO2 over time.

In addition to permanent carbon removal, the material can enhance soil fertility and boost crop yields, particularly in regions where magnesium deficiency reduces agricultural productivity.

ZeroEx CEO Tony Oehm emphasized the importance of cross-industry collaboration: “We believe Enhanced Weathering can only scale through close partnership with the mining industry.”

“By combining Anglo American’s operational expertise with ZeroEx’s science and MRV technology, we can launch projects with unprecedented efficiency, transforming mining by-products into valuable feedstocks that remove carbon at scale, improve soils, and support farmers.”

Anglo American’s Katie Fergusson, SVP Studies & Development, noted that the trial’s primary aim is to prove Enhanced Rock Weathering credits can be generated safely, responsibly, and at commercial scale.

Under the agreement, Isometric will oversee credit issuance following its own Standard and the Enhanced Weathering in Agriculture Protocol, the most science-driven framework currently available. Measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) will be fully managed through Isometric Certify, ensuring transparency and integrity.

High-quality, verifiable credits are critical for scaling carbon removal responsibly. This partnership highlights how mining, technology, and rigorous science can come together to advance global climate goals.
