Key PointsA new type of public company, known as a crypto treasury, simply buys and holds cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin, Ethereum, and even Dogecoin are all on balance sheets now. Isotopologue detection validation. Credit: Nature Astronomy (2025). DOI: 10.1038/s41550-025-02641-4 Astronomers at Leiden University have detected rare isotopes of carbon and oxygen in our neighboring stars for the first time, providing a new path toward better understanding the chemical evolution of the cosmos. The results are published today in the journal Nature Astronomy. The fundamental question about the origin of carbon and oxygen in our universe has preoccupied astronomers for decades. These elements are not only important ingredients of the human body but are also among the most abundant elements in the universe. But in the early universe, shortly after the…

Image source: Getty Images BAE Systems (LSE:BA.) shares have done very well for my portfolio since I first invested in 2022. I fact, I’ve added on dips twice since then, and both positions are also up. The BAE share price has leapt 54% year to date and 240% over five years. Neither figure includes dividends. The outperformance over the FTSE 100 is massive. Recently though, the defence stock has taken a breather. Now at 1,766p, it’s just under 11% lower than its June high of 1,982p. Is this a dip-buying opportunity for my portfolio? Here are my thoughts. Huge backlog…

Image source: The Motley Fool Warren Buffett’s one of the most well-respected investors of our time. Yet over the decades, even the legend has made some mistakes. Even though I usually focus on learning from his successes, it’s also wise to contemplate how to avoid some of his errors along the way. Admit when I’m wrong Buffett invested in the Dexter Shoe Company back the 1990s, paying for it with $443m worth of Berkshire Hathaway stock. The business collapsed under competition, making it a near-total loss. Even though Buffett couldn’t have predicted such a bad outcome, there’s the argument that…

Quarterly earnings results are a good time to check in on a company’s progress, especially compared to its peers in the same sector. Today we are looking at First Solar (NASDAQ:FSLR) and the best and worst performers in the renewable energy industry. Renewable energy companies are buoyed by the secular trend of green energy that is upending traditional power generation. Those who innovate and evolve with this dynamic market can win share while those who continue to rely on legacy technologies can see diminishing demand, which includes headwinds from increasing regulation against “dirty” energy. Additionally, these companies are at the…

Norway has opened the world’s first commercial-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) facility, marking a turning point in global climate action. The project captures carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from a cement plant and stores them deep beneath the seabed in the North Sea. This is the first time a CCS project has been built and operated with a complete value chain: capture, transport, and permanent storage. The facility, known as the Northern Lights, is part of Norway’s Longship initiative. This $3.4 billion program aims to prove that carbon capture can go beyond pilot projects and become commercially viable. Shell, Equinor,…

Right now, there are two established approaches to quantify soil carbon: sampling (testing soil samples) and process-based modeling (which simulates carbon dynamics over time under different farm management or climate scenarios). Boulder-based Perennial is pioneering a third approach—digital soil mapping—which it claims will expand access to carbon markets, regenerative project financing, and sustainability programs in remote or data-scarce regions that have historically been excluded from participation. The startup, which has just secured approval to use its VT0014 digital soil mapping tool in Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) program, uses satellite and other environmental data, machine learning, and historical on-the-ground data to…

Apple is no longer allowed to advertise the Apple Watch as carbon neutral, a German court ruled following a protest from environmentalists about Apple’s promoted claims. The Frankfurt court found the company misled consumers for describing the Apple Watch as a CO2-neutral product. Apple first unveiled its first carbon neutral products starting with the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 in September 2023. The German ruling means that language relating to these devices being carbon neutral will have to be altered or removed in German retail locations and online store. You can see examples of this advertising by browsing…
